Miratus students watch badminton matches and see their idol up-close

Pavilion 2 at the Riocentro venue in Rio de Janeiro buzzed with excitement during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Around 200 students from the Miratus Association, an NGO, watched badminton matches there and showed the contagious energy of the “Badminton Family” of the Rio community of Chacrinha.

Children and youth were given tickets by the Nissan Institute to watch an elite-level competition in the sport they play, letting them witness the first Olympic experience of Ygor Coelho, an athlete discovered at the institution, who became the first Brazilian to compete in badminton at the Olympic Games.

Our young champion played on equal terms against opponents with prior experience of the Olympic Games but he did not make it past the first round. Even so, he received a standing ovation like that of a genuine winner, from a very special crowd of fans.
